Watching movies together as a family is a holiday tradition.

Obsessing over restrooms and restroom technology is a Flushmate tradition.

So, we thought, why not compile a list of our favorite movie scenes that take place in bathrooms? Here are a few of our favorites, with commentary on the applicable restroom technology.

1. “Elf,” 2003

Scene: While taking a shower, Zooey Deschanel finds herself singing an unexpected duet with Will Ferrell. One of the most iconic holiday movies.

Restroom technology: A standard shower, matching in-deck sinks with manual faucets.

2. “Psycho,” 1960

Scene: In one of the most famous movies scenes ever, Janet Leigh steps into the shower and meets a shocking death. Horror movies were never the same.

Restroom technology: A standard showerhead and bathtub drain.

3. “The Godfather,” 1972

Scene: Al Pacino finds a handgun stashed behind a toilet tank and uses it (the gun, not the toilet) to start a ruthless gang war.

Restroom technology: An old-tech gravity toilet, mounted high on the wall to generate extra flushing force. Pressure-assisted toilets, of course, don’t need to be mounted like that, because they force water into the bowl with compressed air, pushing waste out more effectively.

4. “Dumb and Dumber,” 1994

Scene: Jeff Daniels learns a toilet is non-functional at the worst possible time. “I was just shaving!”

Restroom technology: A gravity toilet, failing at its only job.

5. “True Lies,” 1994

Scene: Arnold Schwarzenegger just wants to use the restroom. Three armed assassins have a different plan. Guess who prevails?

Restroom technology: Washdown urinals with manual flushometers, and wall-mounted hand dryers, one of which Schwarzenegger turns into a weapon.

6. “Mean Girls,” 2004

Scenes: Several key conversations take place in the high school’s restroom—“Danny DeVito, I love your work!”—and Lindsay Lohan becomes so unpopular she has to eat her lunch in a restroom stall.

Restroom technology: Gravity toilets, sinks with manual faucets.

7. “The Big Lebowski,” 1998

Scene: Jeff Bridges—aka The Dude—is relaxing in his bathtub when a trio of weird bad guys break in and drop a live marmot into the water.

Restroom technology: A built-in tub.

8. “Jurassic Park,” 1993

Scene: A character is using a toilet in a stand-alone restroom when he is interrupted by a Tyrannosaurus rex.

Restroom technology: A gravity toilet.

9. “The Hangover,” 2009

Scene: Zach Galifianakis is using the toilet in a luxurious Las Vegas restroom when he realizes he shares the space with a live tiger.

Restroom technology: Matching sinks with manual, gooseneck faucets.

10. “The Shining,” 1980

Scenes: Several key moments take place in bathrooms. Jack Nicholson has a conversation with an imaginary bartender in a red-themed restroom and an encounter with a bathing ghoul in green-themed restroom. And finally, there’s the classic “Here’s Johnny!” scene with the late Shelly Duvall.

Restroom technology: In-deck and free-standing porcelain sinks, floor-standing washdown urinals, a built-in tub, a gravity toilet, an insufficiently axe-proof door.

11. “Reservoir Dogs,” 1992

Scene: Tim Roth, carrying a bag full of narcotics, encounters four cops and a drug-sniffing dog in a public restroom. Somehow, mayhem does not ensue.

Restroom technology: Free-standing porcelain sinks with manual faucets, floor-standing washdown urinals, a hand dryer.

12. “Home Alone,” 1990

Scene: In one of the most iconic shots ever—and a true holiday classic—Macaulay Culkin discovers the invigorating effects of aftershave. “Aaaaaaaaaagh!”

Restroom technology: An in-deck sink with a brass manual faucet.

Recent Advances in Toilet Technology

Flushmate has recently introduced two major advances in pressure-assisted toilet technology.

The Flushmate 503UH is the industry’s first 0.75 gpf pressure-assist system. It delivers all the benefits and power of pressurized flushing while using 53% less water than a standard 1.6 gpf gravity toilet.

The Flushmate I-Flush™ is the first solution to combine the power of pressure-assisted technology with the hygiene and convenience of automatic flushing. Its sleek sensor and flush module transform existing pressure-assisted manual flushing toilets powered by Flushmate into hands-free, sensor-activated units, making it a popular choice for commercial restrooms.
